Favorite Story, a radio dramatization bringing classic literature to radio through high-quality half-hour programs, ran from 1946 – 1949. The show originally aired on KFI radio in Los Angeles before leaping to national broadcast. Later, Favorite Story transitioned to television.

This production of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea will certainly have you and your children riveted to the speakers as you listen. And it is our hope that, if your children haven’t done so already, this will inspire them to read the classic novel by one of the greatest authors in history, Jules Verne.

Look for more episodes of Favorite Story in the future!

From 1943, the Homemade Homeschoolers Podcast Network presents: Adventures In Research - Piece of Silk.

Adventures in Research, produced in cooperation with the Westinghouse Research Laboratories, was a radio docu-drama that was heard in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Originally the show was in a questions and answers format, but was changed to present dramatized accounts of important scientific discoveries and inventions while remaining historically accurate.

This episode, Piece of Silk, tells the story of Andre-Jacques Garnerin – the French inventor of the frameless parachute. His first jump was from approximately 3,000 feet in 1797 and in 1802 he successfully completed an 8,000 foot jump in England. We are certain that you and your family will find this show informative, entertaining, and exciting!

From 1941, the HMHS Podcast Network presents Quiz Kids with special guest Jackie Benny.

Quiz Kids was a popular Chicago area radio and television program in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The show, which was hosted by Joe Kelly, would ask a panel of five students, who were chosen for their high IQs, questions that were submitted by listeners.

This particular episode is notable for the special guest, Jack Benny, who posed as a six year old “Jackie” Benny and injects some of his classic comedy into the mix.

We at Homemade Homeschoolers understand that there are as many philosophies about homeschooling and home education as there are homeschooling families, and that there will be some that will listen to this radio program and assert that these children are not educated, but merely adept at retaining and recalling facts; and we would not necessarily disagree with that assertion. Many years ago we adopted Plato’s axiom “education is the kindling of a flame; not the filling of a vessel” as our own – because, try as we might, we cannot improve on the quote! However, seeing as how the children presented on the Quiz Kids programs were chosen because of their individual IQs, it follows that perhaps their flames were kindled in such a way that they had filled their own vessels in the pursuit and love of knowledge, and that their abilities are the logical effect of such. Either way, this show is both fun and amazing!

What are your thoughts on education, learning, knowledge, retention, and wisdom; of the difference between education in the past as juxtaposed to modern public educational trends? Are children merely “taught to the test”, or are they inspired to learn? Would you like to share your thoughts? Our comment section below is very easy to use! Please let us know what you think.

From 1948, the Homemade Homeschoolers Podcast Network presents this episode of Mr. President: George Washington.

Mr. President was a radio series that ran from 1947 to 1953 and starred Edward Arnold as a different U.S. president each week. The episodes focused on an event in the life of a particular President. A research staff made certain that the stories were accurate, but the script was constructed in such a way that the identity of the President was not revealed until the very end of the show. The challenge was to guess which President was being presented.

This episode is about George Washington, but we propose that parents play this for their children without revealing who it is about and see if they can identify which President is featured.

Just click the play button in the convenient player below, or use the subscription and download options to add these podcasts to your personal library or MP3 player.

This is a great find! Homemade Homeschoolers Podcast Network presents the first episode of Horizons West: Mr. Jefferson’s Dream. This amazing radio Docu-Drama cir. 1962 or 1963 dramatizes the story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition; one of the greatest feats of exploration in history.

The series consisted of 13 episodes, and were produced for, and broadcasted on Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. We are offering the remaining 12 episodes in our products catalog as a package so that you and your family can continue the adventure with Lewis and Clark for just $0.99. These radio shows are a great supplement for your children when studying American History in your Homeschool this year, or just for the sheer excitement of listening to this wonderful radio program as a family.

If you are planning to study about the Lewis and Clark expedition this year, we have found some additional resources for you: Christianbooks.com has two versions of the diaries kept by Lewis and Clark on their extraordinary journeys; the 1st is Journals of Lewis and Clark, which corrects the spelling and grammatical errors made by the men writing in haste, as well as being edited for presentation in modern English; and The Journals of Lewis and Clark, which is pretty much presented the way it was written. Also available is the Lewis & Clark and the Louisiana Purchase Wall Map that you and your children can refer to as you listen and read about what President Jefferson referred to as “The Corps of Discovery”.

From 1950, the HMHS Podcast Network presents this episode of the Mark Trail radio show: Polluted Waters.

Mark Trail began as a newspaper comic strip created by Ed Dodd who worked as a national parks guide. Tom Hill, an artist and naturalist, joined Mr. Dodd as an illustrator in 1946; and a quote by his son sums up Mark Trail nicely:

“Mark reflects a reverence for God’s creatures, nature, and the conservation of woods, water, and wildlife.”

Although “Environmentalism” has become politicized, it does not negate the fact that the universe and all that it contains is the property of God; we have been made stewards of it. As good stewards we choose to honor the Creator by caring for His creation. After all, he didn’t proclaim that his work was “good” for no good reason! And that is about as political as we care to get in this post. Enjoy the adventures of Mark Trail, and discuss the traits of a good steward with your children!
